PE Curriculum Overview 2018-2019

Throughout Years 7 to 11 students are taught a rotation of activities each term during their core PE lessons. From Year 9 onwards students also have the option to study the Level 2 BTEC First Award in Sport. This consists of 3 theory lessons per week where students will complete internally assessed assignments, and prepare for an external online exam which they will sit in Year 10.

Year 9

Level 2 BTEC First Award in Sport


Unit 6 - Leading Sports Activities


Students will be taught unit content to prepare for the completion of 3 assignments. They will be taught about the skills and qualities needed to become a good sports leader. They will learn how to plan and deliver a sports session to their peers; and be able to evaluate and give feedback on their own performance.


Unit 1 - Fitness for Sport and Exercise


Students will be taught about the components of fitness, the principles of training, heart rate and how to calculate maximum heart rates, training methods, and fitness testing.  Students need to know each of these sections to successfully pass the externally assessed online exam.

In unit 6, students will complete 3 assignments which are internally assessed, and externally verified.

In unit 1, students are taught topics of the exam, section by section, and are tested on these in sections. This helps prepare students to sit the full exam in year 10 and 11. Students will take part in walking, talking marks to help prepare them for the exam also.




Year 10

Level 2 BTEC Sport First Award in Sport

Unit 1 - Fitness for Sport and Exercise

Students continue with exam preparations, in sections and completing practice papers and walking talking marks. Students will sit the exam in December.

Unit 5 -  Training for Personal Fitness


Students will be taught unit content to prepare for the completion of 4 assignments. They will be taught how to design and implement a six week training programme, and how to review performances in order to make improvements.

Unit 1 - Students will complete practice exams in preparation for sitting the exam in December. Students will resit the exam by May if necessary.

Unit 5 - students will complete 4 assignments which are internally marked and assessed by July.




Year 11

Level 2 BTEC Sport First Award in Sport

Unit 1 - Fitness for Sport and Exercise

Any students who need to improve their grade, will have the opportunity to resit. 1 lesson per week is used to prepare for the resit.


Unit 2 - Practical Sports Performance

Students will be taught practical skills, techniques and tactics in 2 team sports.




Unit 1 - Exam resits if needed.


Unit 2 - Students will complete 3 assignments by Feb half term. Students will be videoed taking part in skills, and drills in 2 different sports; and provide voice over explanations of the activity. They will review their performance and write a development plan in order to improve performance.
